Services
Library Services: Access, Resources, and Support
Circulation
The Library’s Client Services desk, right at the entrance, helps you check out and return books. They also handle overdue fines, lost items, and give out computer cards for the labs. If you have any questions, they can either help or point you to the right person. You can also request books from other campuses or libraries using Inter-Branch or Inter-Library Loans.
Short Loan Collection: If your course has required reading, it might be in the Short Loan Collection. These items can be borrowed for two hours (Alice Campus) or one hour (East London Campus), but they must stay in the Library. On the Alice Campus, some can be taken overnight, but they must be back by 9 am the next day. Return on time to avoid fines, and if you’re three days late, it could go to the University Disciplinary Committee.
Reserving Books: If the book you need is checked out, you can reserve it at the Library desk or online using the “Request” button on the OPAC system. You’ll be notified when it’s available.

															Inter-Library Loans
Inter-Library Loan services are available for staff and postgrad students.
If you don’t return items borrowed through this service by the due date, your borrowing privileges will be suspended until the overdue item is returned.
Any restrictions placed on materials by the lending library must be followed by both the borrowing and lending libraries.
For periodical articles requested through Inter-Library Loan, if a photocopy is provided, you won’t have to pay for it, and it becomes your property.
The University Librarian may set fees for using the Inter-Library Loan system. Currently, there’s a R20 charge for book loans.

Resources
Howard PIM Library of Rare Books
Located on the lower ground floor of the Alice Campus Library, this collection features rare books focused on South African and African history and education.
As a closed-access library, browsing the shelves isn’t permitted. Visitors must search for materials on the OPAC or be referred by Information Services Librarians. Items cannot be removed, and all photocopying is handled by the Librarian.
Resources
Printing & Photocopy
The Library provides computers with full Internet access for browsing and email communication, along with word processing software for assignments.
Printing services are available at both the Alice and East London campuses, managed by Aloe Office & Business Equipment; inquiries about printing should be directed to them.
Due to high usage, a booking system is in place to ensure equal access, prioritizing academic use. Non-academic users may need to relinquish their spot for those with urgent needs. There are also facilities for leaving bags and coats, ample study space, and photocopying services at 50 cents per page.
