Uncovering Our Rich Heritage
The Eastern Cape is embedded in South Africa’s rich history. This province is the proud birthplace of iconic anti-apartheid leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo. With its vibrant mix of Xhosa, Afrikaans, and English influences, the Eastern Cape offers a unique cultural heritage that is truly captivating.
From 1916 to 1959, the UFH was a beacon of education, providing Western-style academic opportunities to black Africans. This institution was instrumental in developing a black African elite, impacting sub-Saharan Africa. Our esteemed alumni, including luminaries like Kenneth Kaunda and Seretse Khama played pivotal roles in independence movements while poet Dennis Brutus and Drum journalist Can Themba made positive changes to South Africa too.
