The University of Fort Hare (UFH) has reached another proud milestone on its renewal journey. The 109-year-old institution was recently awarded the Southern African Research and Innovation Management Association (SARIMA) Excellence Award for Organisational Growth in Research Management.

The accolade recognises the institution’s steady progress in strengthening its research ecosystem and positioning itself as a leading research-intensive university in southern Africa and beyond.

According to Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Partnerships and Innovation (RPI), Dr Nthabi Taole-Mjimba, the award comes at a time when UFH is steadily building its reputation in the national and international research space. She described the recognition as a powerful affirmation of UFH’s strategic direction.

“As the University of Fort Hare continues to implement its strategic plan focused on renewal, this award signifies significant progress made in transforming into one of the leading research-focused universities. It is a testament to the commitment and hard work of staff at DRI in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, including faculties and various support departments.”

“It highlights the achievements of the Department of Research and Innovation (DRI), established in 2022, which has become a driver of transformation, efficiency, and global partnerships.”

Transforming Research Through Innovation and Systems

At the centre of this acknowledgement is the implementation of policies, systems, and innovative initiatives that have reshaped how research is managed at UFH. Director of Research and Innovation, Dr Aceme Nyika, explained:

“Since its establishment, the DRI has put in place policy frameworks, standard operating procedures and operational systems that foster research excellence and innovation. We have been driving digital transformation to enhance efficiency. For instance, automated online systems for research ethics clearance, page fee applications and capturing of research outputs have been developed and are operational.”

Strengthening Collaborations and Building Global Partnerships

The Department has also focused on strengthening research entities and collaborations. “Research niche areas, centres, institutes and Chairs have been established and are being strengthened to enhance both the quality and quantity of institutional research output. We are also building partnerships with national, regional and international organisations, funders and private sector stakeholders,” said Dr Nyika.

He emphasized that the award reflects the efforts of the department and also the leadership guiding it. “This recognition is a result of innovative and visionary leadership provided by the DVC: RPI. The kind of leadership that nurtures interpersonal skills and team spirit, and inspires staff members to be committed, innovative and hard-working,” he said.

For staff, researchers, and students, this recognition is also a source of motivation. “It is an independent recognition of the hard work being done by UFH staff, researchers, postdoctoral fellows, students, and our external collaborators. It will definitely encourage and inspire all role players to continue working hard to ensure that the societal impact of our research is enhanced,” said Dr Nyika.

Laying the Foundation for Future Research Excellence

Building on momentum, UFH is already laying the groundwork for even greater impact. “We are working hard to enhance our capability to protect and commercialise intellectual property emanating from research conducted at the university. Funds for establishing a Research and Innovation Hub have been secured and architectural plans are ready for construction to commence,” revealed Dr Nyika.

The DVC: RPI assured the UFH community that the university is firmly on an upward path.

“A strong foundation for sustainable growth of research at the university is now in place, and the university is set to ascend to its rightful position as one of the leading research-intensive universities nationally and globally.”
