An esteemed alumnus of the University of Fort Hare (UFH), Wandile Sihlobo, Chief Economist of the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa, has been appointed to serve on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s newly formed Presidential Economic Advisory Council (PEAC).
The appointment of the Council members was announced late last year as part of the President’s efforts to strengthen South Africa’s economic trajectory and foster sustainable growth during the term of the 7th Administration.
Sihlobo, an accomplished economist and author of Finding Common Ground: Land, Equity, and Agriculture, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from UFH.
The Council brings together a diverse group of local and international experts, drawn from academia, the private sector, labor, and civil society, to advise on crucial economic issues such as fiscal policy, energy transition, and poverty alleviation.
Along with the other members, Sihlobo will play an important role in guiding the 7th Administration in its pursuit of rapid, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth and job creation.
Sihlobo, who is well-regarded for his expertise in agricultural economics and his leadership role in shaping policy to address key challenges in the sector, emphasized the importance of his alma mater during a recent visit, stating, “We can’t talk of agricultural growth and expansion in the Eastern Cape without including Fort Hare, its researchers, and students.” His statement highlights the pivotal role that Fort Hare play in advancing agricultural knowledge and research.
The Council will be key in facilitating discussions on emerging economic challenges and opportunities, ensuring that South Africa’s economic policies remain coherent, consistent, and adaptable to global shifts.
Congratulations, Sihlobo! We are confident that your extensive experience as a thought leader and commissioner at the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (ITAC) makes you a valuable addition to the team.
