#AlumniOnTheMove | Law Alumna appointed MD of Singapore Airlines GSA, Afro Asian Travel Services

Akona Mdlulwa, University of Fort Hare Law alumna, appointed Managing Director of Singapore Airlines GSA, Afro Asian Travel Services.

Akona Mdlulwa, a University of Fort Hare (UFH) Law alumna, has earned her stripes as one of the “movers and shakers” in the global tourism industry. This follows her appointment as Managing Director of Singapore Airlines GSA, Afro Asian Travel Services, part of the Tourvest Group.

According to Southern Africa’s travel news, Mdlulwa’s appointment follows the retirement of Marilyn J. Lewis, who led the business for the past six years.

Mdlulwa graduated with an LLB degree from Fort Hare in 2007, thereafter completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Commercial and Business Law from Wits University, and various short courses in Finance and Leadership.

Admitted as an attorney, she joined the Tourvest family in 2019 as Head of Commercial Law at Tourvest Travel Services.

Over the years, she has built a reputation for her leadership and operational expertise, making her a perfect fit for her new role. This was attested by Lewis, her predecessor, who stated:

“There is little doubt that this business is in excellent hands, with Akona’s appointment ensuring continuity. She is a seasoned member of the Tourvest family, with vast experience and knowledge of the broader sector and business. I look forward to seeing this business take advantage of the amazing tourism potential the Asian and African corridor offers.”

In addition to being an accomplished professional, she is also a mother with a passion for African fashion and choral music. “Apart from living and breathing tourism every day, I also have a keen interest in African fashion and choral music and a mother to a busy toddler boy,” said Mdlulwa.

This appointment marks a significant milestone for both Mdlulwa and UFH, showcasing the university’s continued contribution to producing exceptional professionals in the global marketplace.
