Academic Biography

Helen Bunt joined the University of Fort Hare (UFH) in 2013 as a Preceptor in the Department of Nursing Science, where she facilitated undergraduate modules in Medical and Surgical Nursing Science and Community Health Nursing Science through problem-based learning methodologies. From 2017 to 2022, she served as a Lecturer in Clinical Mentorship in HIV and Research and co-ordinated the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Management of HIV/AIDS. Since 2023 Helen has lectured Fundamentals in Nursing and Multi-Disciplinary Team, Ethical & Legal Issues to first-year students. Helen brings extensive experience in HIV/AIDS care and palliative nursing to her academic role. Prior to joining UFH, she established Dignity House, a hospice at Sophumelela Centre in East London, where she served as Nursing Manager for five years. From 2000 to 2008, she worked with Hospice South Africa in multiple capacities, including In-patient Professional Nurse, Home-based Care Nurse supervising caregivers and community support groups, and Regional Mentor for the Eastern Cape. Her nursing career began with general nursing training at Frere Hospital in Buffalo City and midwifery training at Mowbray Maternity Hospital in Cape Town. Between 1985 and 1999, Helen worked with the Healthcare Christian Fellowship in Latin America as a field worker and regional trainer, contributing to international health education and outreach. Helen holds a Master’s degree in Nursing, with research focused on the experiences of HIV and AIDS patients and their families regarding palliative care in an urban care setting. Her areas of academic interest and specialisation include palliative care, HIV/AIDS nursing, and clinical education. She actively engages in international online exchange programmes and contributes to institutional governance as a member of the Faculty of Health Sciences Board.
