Anglican Students Society (An’soc)

About

Nurturing and Empowering Young Christian Leaders

An’soc is an Anglican group for university students in higher education based at the Alice campus. Established in 1960 by students of that era, it stood against inequality and racism in academic institutions. Additionally, it played a part, albeit minor, in opposing apartheid. With branches in various countries across Southern Africa, we gather for conferences, revivals, and praise and worship sessions. Our primary goal is to create a warm and inclusive environment, welcoming both Anglican students and non-Anglicans on campus, ensuring everyone feels valued and part of our community. Recognising the need for strong leadership in South Africa and the broader African context, one of our main objectives is to nurture and empower mature Christian leaders. By preparing these leaders to take on significant roles within the church and society, we aim to inspire hope for the future. Many individuals once part of this organisation have led the church and the country. Our current Archbishop in Southern Africa, Most Revd Dr Thabo Makgoba, was an active member and continues to show his support. At the branch level, we gather for activities such as Bible study, revivals, Sunday services, leadership workshops, outreach programs, and study sessions to enhance our fellowship. Within this framework, we prioritise academic excellence and support each other in our studies to ensure success and achievement.
