The University of Fort Hare (UFH) is a vibrant institution with a rich historical legacy and a distinct presence across three campuses in South Africa. Each campus has its own personality, offering students world-class education in a warm and inviting environment.
Our Alice campus has a heritage of academic excellence and is the main UFH campus. Situated close to King Williams Town, our Bhisho campus prepares students and provides a gateway to public service. The UFH campus in East London has an urban vibe with a strong focus on professionalism, giving students the tools they need to excel in their future careers.

Safety & Security measures
UFH Protection Services recognises its crucial role in creating a safe student environment. The unit endeavours to help and offer support to students, staff, and visitors and maintain the protection of buildings and other University Assets.
Important Rules
- Assisting unauthorised access to buildings or propping open exterior doors against the building protection policy violates the Access Control Policy.
- Lodging overnight except in residential areas or for academic purposes is prohibited.
- Adhere to all campus fire safety rules, including prompt & orderly evacuation in case of an alarm.
- Disrupting classroom, administration or other Institutional sponsored or approved activities can result in citations by Protection Services, enforcement by the Student Conduct and Standards and/or expulsion from campus.
- Drinking inside Institution premises is prohibited. Any form of drug is strictly forbidden.
Crime Prevention
A secure environment is made possible through community involvement in crime prevention.
Community crime prevention aims to help you recognise your own vulnerability to crime and reduce your risk through preventive action & cooperation with Protection Services.
Theft is the most common crime on campus. Most thefts occur during daylight, and in 80% of reported thefts and burglaries, thieves enter the building without forced entry.
Report suspicious activities to one another & Protection Services.
Theft Prevention
- Keep outside doors locked.
- Ask strangers to wait in communal areas while their friends are called.
- Lock your room door and windows when you leave, and take the key.
- Keep small valuable items out of sight in a closed drawer or a safe place.
- Politely help persons in your building that you do not recognise.
- Keep your room locked.
- Do not leave your car unlocked.
- Do not leave coats, books, or other valuable items in communal areas; keep them in your locked room.
- Secure your laptop with quality hardware (cable locks, lockdown devices, etc)
- Try to keep your laptop and other portable electronics with you

- Walk in pairs.
- Do not leave laptops in communal areas.
- Do not leave the laptop in plain sight, especially in a vehicle.
- Always be alert of your surroundings.
- Consult security when in doubt.
- Lock away your valuables.
- Report any suspicious activity.
- Always carry your student card.
- Leave your room key at the top of the door.
- Leave your room unlocked even if you are going to the bathroom.
- Leave your laptop or any other valuables near windows.
- Walk alone at night.
- Accept help from strangers.
