Six trophies for Fort Hare Karate kids
A team of Fourteen University of Fort Hare Karatekas kicked for glory and brought home six trophies in the regional annual Len Barnes tournament held in Thokoza town hall- Ekurhuleni on 23rd August. There were three fighting categories for females U55 kilograms, U65 kilograms and Over 65 kilograms. For the males there were also three fighting categories U60 kilograms, U70 kilograms and Over 80 kilograms. Under the instruction of Sensei Siphiwe Dlulane who no longer needs any introduction in the world’s toughest and knock down style the team was so competitive reflecting the world’s heavyweight champion’s prowess.
This Regional tournament attracted fighters from Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, DR Congo and South Africa. Fort Hare managed to win six trophies. Maramura Monkey fighter Tafadzwa Females U65kg 1st Place , Nongauza Anilla Females U55kg 2nd Place , Moyana Sanele Females U55kg 3rd Place, Ratazayo Gcobisa Females U70kg 4th Place. Sensei Dlulane led by positive example as he himself steamrolled the over 80kg division with Dineo Dlulane his wife winning the females over 70kg division.
UFH team will also participate in the University Sports South Africa games to be held in Port Elizabeth this summer. “Given our recent performance we are expecting the USSA’s to be a walk in the park” said Maramura Tafadzwa .The team’s future plans are to expand its Dojo membership and have more selected to don the national colours, with the kind of support we are getting from the sports department in particular our sports officer Mr Sigila, all is achievable, concluded Maramura Tafadzwa.
