UFH staff member takes on 2020 Ironman 70.3
The triathlon event, regarded as the toughest athletics competition in Africa, attracted more than 1400 participants from around the world. Athletes were greeted with a 1.9km ocean swim at the Orient Beach, followed by a 90.1km bike ride down the N2 highway and turning around at the Berlin Off-ramp before taking on a 21.1km run at the Esplanade.
Her passion for athletics developed in 2008 when she took part in speed walking challenges. “A colleague and I took part in a cabbage patch race and after that, we were hooked.” She never looked back since then.
In 2015 she participated in her first marathon of 42.2km. This was followed by the two oceans 56km ultra marathon in 2017. “After the two marathons I set myself this exciting goal, to take on the Ironman”.
To prepare for the race, Petro joined a group of local bike riders and perfected her swimming strokes at the Joan Harrison swimming pool.
