The University of Fort Hare (UFH) continues to assert itself as a “University of Choice,” this is confirmed by the significant number of applications for enrolment received for the 2024 academic year.

At the close of the application cycle on 30 November 2023, the University had received 223 983 applications. Of the applications, 148 088 were first-time-entering (FTEN) applicants for 3 685 available spaces. With the opening of late applications earlier this week, a surge in the number is expected.

Registration for the academic year commenced on 22 January. Late applications for undergrad and postgraduate studies in the faculties of education, science and agriculture, management and commerce, health sciences, and social sciences & humanities opened for some programmes and will close on 5 February 2024.

For the previous year (2023) the University received a record-breaking number of applications for undergraduate programmes from FTEN students for the 2023 academic year which was an increase from 38 000 for the 2022 academic year to 258 726 - this represented a 580% year-on-year increase.

A study by the Directorate:  Institutional Advancement (Marketing and Communications) showed that students selected the University because of its location, the strong executive leadership team and due to the institution’s good reputation.

The good reputation of the 108-year-old institution was further asserted in September last year when the University was named one of the coolest university brands in South Africa by the Sunday Times GenNext survey that unveiled the most admired South African brands across 70 categories, including institutions of higher learning.

The high quality of the education offered by the University was also re-affirmed by the release of the 2023/2024 University Ranking by the Academic Performance (URAP) World Rankings which placed the University in the world’s top 2000 universities for academic performance.  The University has ranked in 1952nd position for the year 2023-24, significantly up from its prior rank of 2259th position in 2022-23.

In its current Strategic Plan (2022-2026), the institution has set itself seven main strategic goals and one of those goals is to Improve the Quality of Student Life and Enhance Student Experience. To reach this goal, a priority has been placed on creating an environment that supports students in active and experiential learning, well-being, and psycho-social development.
