The University of Fort Hare has announced the appointment of Professor Graeme Bradley as Dean of the Faculty of Science and Agriculture with effect from 1 December 2021.

Professor Bradley holds a BSc, BSc Hons, MSc and PhD from the University of Port Elizabeth (now Nelson Mandela University). His career path included industrial, clinical and academic experience.

Professor Bradley’s career began at UFH in 2007 when was appointed the position of Professor of Biochemistry and Head of Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology. During the last 15 years, he has served as the Director of the School of Biological and Environmental Sciences, Deputy Dean: Research and Internationalization, acting Dean: Faculty of Science and Agriculture, Senate representative on Council, and acting Director of Planning and Quality Assurance. He has also been chairperson or member of numerous Faculty and Senate committees.

Over the last 20 years Professor Bradley specialised in the Biochemistry of plant stress and has successfully established a research group at UFH, studying the resistance mechanism of wheat to Russian Wheat Aphid Biotypes.

He also has an interest in understanding the biochemical mechanisms underlying the use of plants in alternative/ethnomedicine. He has expanded this project with national collaborators, to explore the potential of marine algae as a source of new/novel compounds to treat diabetes, or cancer.

 Recently he was successful together with Prof Niall Vine to obtain funding of R5.4 million to establish a DSI/NRF SAIAB/UFH Joint Marine Laboratory at the University of Fort Hare.

 He has supervised to completion 16 PhD students (4 as co-supervisor); 24 Master’s (3 as co-supervisor) and 47 honours students and has hosted 2 post-doctoral fellows. He is currently supervising 6 PhD (3 as co-supervisor), and 4 MSc students.

 Since 1999, he has also served as national and international external examiner for 79 MSc and PhD students. He has published 69 research articles and one book chapter and presented papers/posters at 17 international and 26 national conferences (H index is 14 Scopus/ISI Web of Science). He currently holds a C2 rating from the NRF.
