On Friday, 23 February 2024, the University of Fort Hare received a donation of R1.3 million from the Motsepe Foundation.

The generous donation which will be channelled towards alleviating the financial burden on disadvantaged deserving students, comes as students in the higher education sector continue to face financial challenges.

In total, the Foundation donated R30 million to Student Representative Council (SRC) Presidents from across the country’s 26 universities during a Universities in Dialogue meeting held at the Sandton Convention Center.

The UFH donation was received by SRC President, Mr Aphelele Matinise, alongside the UFH Student Developer from Student Affairs, Mr Dzulani Munzhelele.

This is the second consecutive year UFH benefited from the Foundation’s kind gesture. In 2023, Fort Hare received the same amount to serve the same purpose of alleviating the burden of student debt.

In welcoming the donation, Matinise expressed the University community’s sincere appreciation to Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe, CEO and Co-Founder of the Motsepe Foundation, “for her visionary leadership and unwavering dedication to uplifting students nationwide. We would also like to express our gratitude to the Foundation for its continued support.”

“As custodians of this donation, we assure our fellow students that transparency and accountability will guide every step of the process in alleviating student debts using this donation. We will publish a comprehensive report outlining how the allocation process will unfold and the category of students that will benefit, as soon as possible,” he assured.
