While preparing for the much-anticipated State of the Province Address (SOPA), Mr Oscar Lubabalo Mabuyane, one of our esteemed Alumni and Honourable Premier of the Eastern Cape, visited the UFH Shop on the East London campus today to buy a new Alumni blazer.

Premier Mabuyane will deliver his address tomorrow (23 February 2021).

Counted among our notable Alumni, he graduated from UFH with a Bcom in Economics and Business Management in the early 2000’s.

Reliving some of his fondest memories as a young student residing in room 100 at the Beda residences on the Alice Campus, the Premier said he could write a book about his time at UFH.

"Fort Hare made me who I am today. The university helped shape a  young man from Ngcobo into a Premier," he said.

Some of his fondest memories that he shared include the establishment of Fort Hare FM, reviving of Alumni Chapters in Lesotho, Botswana and Swaziland.

Closest to his heart is the establishment of the Matric Excellence Project. "This project is very close to my heart because it assisted a lot of black underprivileged individuals to achieve their dreams of attending a university and obtaining a qualification to start a career."

The Premier implored past and present students to preserve the history of the university and to maintain its greatness. "Fort Hare is a culture, it's our heritage. It  is us."
