We started as a unit within the department of Nursing Science. It offers postgraduate programmes such as the Advanced Diploma in Public Health, Masters in Public Health, Masters in Public Health Albertina Sisulu Executive Leadership in Health (ASELPH),which is a fellowship programme.
The ASELPH programme is designed to contribute to the goals of the Health Minister’s Health Management Development Plan for South Africa, which focuses on developing capacity and a common understanding of policy and implementation among three levels of the health care system - political leadership, health executives responsible for translating policy into action, and mid-level (emerging) managers responsible for implementation.
ASELPH specifically supports the second of these groups, the executive leadership. With increased skills and capacity, ASELPH graduates are making more meaningful contributions toward an efficient, effective and equitable utilization and distribution of available resources.
The ASELPH Programme initiated in 2012 is a partnership among the University of Pretoria (UP), the University of Fort Hare (UFH), the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (Harvard), and South Africa Partners (SA Partners) in collaboration with the South African National Department of Health (NDOH). ASELPH was developed with generous support from The Atlantic Philanthropies, USAID, and ELMA South Africa Foundation, which collectively funded the first 4 years of the programme’s development.
ASELPH’s goal is to build health management training capacity with a focus on Leadership in South Africa, addressing critical gaps in executive health management training - from national office, through the provincial and district levels, down to hospital executives as the need arises.
