SALARY: R 962 400 - R 1 203 000 (All-inclusive package)


The University of Fort Hare seeks to employ an individual with exceptional financial reporting, management, and interpersonal capabilities to join the Finance Department leadership team as the Financial Accountant. The successful candidate will lead this Financial Accounting unit responsible for Financial Planning, Financial Control, Operational Financial Management, Cash Flow Management, Asset Management and Reporting.  The position reports directly to the Director: Finance. The individual will be responsible for the following sub units: General Ledger maintenance, Supplier reconciliations and payments, Sundry payments, Cash management and Asset Management.



  • Senior Certificate plus Honour’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CA(SA) would be added advantage
  • Minimum of 5 years' working experience as the Financial Accountant preferable in the higher education sector
  • Experience in ITS system is essential
  • Experience in the implementation of IFRS Standards
  • Experience in managing audits (internal and external)
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications including , graphs and pivot table analysis
  • Proven report writing and presentation skills
  • Proven ability to plan, develop and execute creative approaches to complex financial issue
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational and management skills
  • Valid driver's license.


Responsibilities Include:

 Financial Planning

  • Serve as financial advisor to the University, responsible for financial planning, and tax compliance/planning
  • Conduct financial analysis (projections) of projects and compile comprehensive reports
  • Evaluate the results of university financial operations
  • Serve as liaison to financial service providers (audit, tax, legal, insurance, banking, lending institutions, actuaries, valuators)
  • Identify key performance indicators and opportunities that can be leveraged to improve the University’s viability and implement a process for tracking and measuring results
  • Ensure a complete understanding of the accounting and legal requirements in a higher education environment and develop and implement controls based on these

Operational Financial Management

  • Ensure that Management reporting systems are maintained and periodically reviewed in the light of changing user requirements
  • Oversee the implementation of general ledger and financial reports, including monthly reporting packaging, quarterly, mid-term and annual financial statements and the preparation and distribution of monthly management accounts by the finance accounting department
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and midyear financial statements
  • Distribute financial statements once council approves them for issue
  • Approve journals prepared
  • Approve payments
  • Ensure that all control accounts are cleared.

Section Management

  • Develop and maintain an annual operational plan to implement based on the Finance strategy
  • Provide information for management forums, contributing accurate details to enable sound decision making
  • Produce reports for area of responsibility, for submission to the Director
  • Establish and maintain ethical relations with vendors and local and foreign tertiary institutions
  • Develop and manage supplier relationships appropriate to the value and risk to the organization
  • Respond to requests for documentation and information, as required by internal or external audits
  • Actively participate in the recruitment of subordinates aligned to the operational plan
  • Manage the performance of subordinates in accordance with the performance management policy and procedure and carry out bi-annual performance reviews
  • Identify and advise on training and development needs, implementing plans to address requirements, as appropriate

Asset Management

  • Review and sign off on Monthly reconciliation of moveable and immoveable Assets
  • Maintenance of the fixed asset register
  • Physical verification of assets at least once a year
  • Reconciliation of the Asset Register to the Annual Financial Statements
  • Reconciliation of Additions to Property Plant and Equipment
  • Reconciliation of Disposals to Property Plant and Equipment


  • Preparation of the Mid-Year Report
  • Assist in the preparation of the Annual Financial Statements of the university 
  • Prepare Quarterly Management Accounts for the university
  • Analyze and interpret financial information in the balance sheet and income statement.
  • Review and submit the monthly VAT returns
  • Compile and submit standard and ad hoc internal and external management reports
  • Maintain and improve financial reporting processes

Risk Management and compliance

  • Responsible for compiling the risk register for the financial accounting unit
  • Monitoring how the risk is evaluated in financial accounting
