African Studies Masters Programme

The Fort Hare Institute of Social and Economic Research (FHISER), a dedicated interdisciplinary research and post-graduate training centre on the University of Fort Hare’s East London campus, is now offering a new Masters degree programme in African Studies. It is geared to stimulate new and dynamic research and scholarship about Africa, combining academic and applied perspectives and approaches to the continent. The programme will consist of three examinable courses, a research module and a mini-thesis. The core modules centre on theoretical and methodological issues in the student’s chosen area of specialisation, while the research methodology module will prepare students for the production of the mini-thesis. The course is available over a year-and-a-half on a full-time basis and two years on a part-time basis. Limited scholarships are available for deserving full-time students. Graduates will be awarded a Masters degree in Social Science and Humanities from the University of Fort Hare.

The programme offers training in the following areas of specialisation:

  • Cultural Studies
  • Gender Studies
  • Urban Studies
  • Historical Studies
  • Politics and Development Studies
