Library Rules and Regulations Printer Version of this page

The Library rules and regulations are published in the University calendar. It is every individual's responsibility to make him/herself aware of the rules that apply when using the Library.

The rules have been carefully designed to make sure that every Library user gets access to Library resources according to his/her need. We need to keep Library materials safe and available to all now and in the future. Libraries cannot function when their members are selfish and unwilling to share with others. Remember that if you break these rules other Library users will suffer.

  • Borrowing Books

You should register to join the Library at the beginning of the academic year. Your staff/student card is your key to accessing Library services, and you should always bring it with you when you visit the Library.

Each book is identified with a shelf number that is related to its subject. The shelf number indicates the location of the book on the shelves. To find out what books are in the Library you must consult the Library Catalogue. A wide range of search options are available. For assistance in using the Library Catalogue you should consult one of the Information Librarians.

Provided that no other Library user has made reservation for a book, the loan may be extended (renewed) for a further two weeks, after which the book must be returned to the Library. Note that you can renew your books on-line using the Library Catalogue, provided that you don't have any overdue books or outstanding fines.

Students must return all their books before the end of each academic semester. If you fail to do so, your student account will be debited with the average replacement cost of a book to the Library (Currently calculated as R500-00) as well as such fines and other fees as may be payable. The replacement cost of the book as charged is refundable in the event that the book is returned, but the fines and administrative charges remain payable.
