To qualify for this degree a learner needs ten (10) full credits, that means two (2) majors (third year courses, accounting for six credits) and a combination of first- and second-year credits. A learner may, in addition to the two majors, do two second year courses, or two first year and one second year course, or four first year courses.

Social Work is a compulsory four-year major course, which qualifies one for a Bachelor of Social Science (Social Work) degree. To register as a social worker, you must have completed the full four-year course in the prescribed Social Work curriculum.
The curriculum for the Bachelor of Social Science(Social Work) degree is essentially similar to the Bachelor of Social Science degree curriculum. Social Work IV is, however, compulsory in the fourth year of study.
The degree will only be granted after fulfilling all the practical work requirements, as laid down by the Department of Social Development. The degree is made up of eleven (11) courses. ^ TOP
Social Work 3 can be taken as a major subject in the Bachelor of Social Science degree. The degree is made up of ten (10) courses plus Honours in Social Work. ^ TOP
The Department accepts students with a three-year degree who have majored in Social Work for a full or part time Honours degree programme. Students with a four-year degree in Social Work who wish to further their studies but are not sufficiently prepared for Master’s level work may also apply. ^ TOP
This degree is directed at social workers and others who wish to register and practice as probation officers. Preference will be given to students with a major in Social Work (three or four years) but students with other appropriate majors such as Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Criminology, Education or Law will be considered. ^ TOP

The East London Campus will offer both a full and part-time Honours programme in Psychology as from 2005. The Board of Psychology has accredited the East London Department Honours programme as equivalent to the B. Psych degree, subsequent to which a student may apply to complete a 6-month internship, write the Board exam and register as a Registered Counsellor.

The Department of Sociology and Industrial Sociology offer both full time and part time Interdisciplinary Honours Degree Programmes in Industrial Relations, Development Studies and Culture and Tourism. Admission to the Interdisciplinary Honours Programme requires candidates to obtain a second class pass (60% or above) at the 300 / 400 level in at least one of the following majors: Anthropology, Economics, History, Industrial Sociology, Philosophy, Politics, Psychology or Sociology. Admission to the Programme with major subjects other than those listed above is subject to the permission of the Lecturer-in-Charge of the Department. In order to successfully complete the degree, candidates must pass (that is, obtain at least 50%) for both core papers and the research project report.

The Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology consists of three papers (Therapeutic Interventions, Systematic Interventions and Assessment), a practical programme and a research project. The degree has a particular focus on mental health needs from a primary mental health care perspective and strives to train psychologists to address the needs of South Africans in changing community contexts. The degree meets the requirements of the Professional Board for Psychology for admission to an internship in Counselling Psychology, with the department being recognized as a training institute. Internships are offered through the Psychological Services Centre. Students who have passed all their papers may apply for an internship position. On successful completion of the degree, internship and Board examination, the student may register as a Counselling Psychologist with the HPCSA. ^ TOP
This Master’s degree in Psychology by Thesis is a research degree, which is governed by the general regulations for Masters degrees in the University. Full time students may complete the requirements for the degree in one year and part time students in two years. Students are offered, in addition to individual supervision for their thesis, a programme of seminars and reading groups to support them in their research. ^ TOP
The Department offers Masters degrees by thesis only or by coursework and thesis. The coursework programme aims to meet the needs of the social worker seeking an improved generic qualification or specialized training inter alia in the areas of counselling, legal social work, community development or social services management. The programme is also open to non social workers with an approved qualification. ^ TOP
A Master’s Degree in Rural Development is offered by the Department of Sociology and Industrial Sociology. It consists of three examinable papers, one non-examinable paper and a research project. Full time students may complete the requirements for the degree in one year and part time students in two years.
