Ettienne Smook, a contract lecturer and PhD student with the University of Fort Hare, obtained his Bachelor of Arts and Honour’s degrees from the University of South Africa and thereafter enrolled for an M.A. at the North-West University. His M.A. dissertation suggested the mutual exclusivity of authentic being and the consumer context and, owing to the rule of commodification, thereby offered an account of 21st century alienation amongst people. With Prof. A. Olivier as supervisor, he intends with his PhD thesis to offer an account of how authenticity, which, as an ideal, had become warped due to private property, may be recovered through a communalist paradigm.
