School of General and Continuing Education
HEAD OF SCHOOL'S MESSAGE
With the closing of teacher training colleges post 1994, teacher education became the sole responsibility of universities in South Africa. This meant that the University of Fort Hare, who through its reach rural history, teacher education for primary school training presented an opportunity to establish an urban campus in East London.
The origin of the Faculty of Education for Initial Teacher Training was located in Rhodes University. With the restructuring of higher education institutions the East London campus became the domain of the University of Fort Hare. The current, Faculty of Education at UFH, East London campus offers the initial teacher training programmes, only for primary school teacher training in the General Education and Training (GET) band alongside two in-service programmes namely the Advanced Certificate in Education (ACE) and the National Professional Diploma in Education (NPDE) which have subsequently been phased out and will be replaced with educational programmes aligned to the new national policy for teacher education.
