The School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS) was established in June 2005 to look after the needs of postgraduate study. It currently offers four qualifications, B.Ed (Hons); PGDHET; M.Ed and PhD. As the first school of postgraduate studies in the University within the Faculty of Education, the SPGS is in a unique and exciting position to pioneer cutting edge epistemologies as it strives to offer students opportunities to specialize at an advanced level in their chosen field of study as well as train researchers. Although recently established the School has already distinguished itself as a hub of educational research activity within the Faculty. A number of SPGS academics are active researchers who are involved in funded national and international collaborative research projects. Plans are underway to attach masters and doctoral students to some of the research projects in order to enable them to gain research experience as well as be exposed to live educational issues. Opportunities for research training for students and faculty members are further enhanced by a variety of activities such as the Education Research and Development Forum; a periodic forum attended by staff and students where researchers share their work-in-progress research or completed research with colleagues. In addition there are specialist research seminars for masters and doctoral students designed to support students in the development of their theses. In both the Research Forum and seminars, scholarship is promoted through engaging academic debate on topics under discussion. Increasingly we see these activities as developing a cadre of vibrant postgraduate community of students who are praxis-oriented.
