(Senior Phase or FET Phase):  CODE 52401

Purpose

       The PGCE is a ‘capping’ qualification for persons wanting to become qualified as professional educators in schooling after having completed an appropriate Bachelor’s degree (at least 360 credits) other than a BEd.

       This certificate, following an approved degree, is recognized by Statute and employing authorities as equivalent to a Bachelor of Education (Senior Phase or FET Phase) degree.

Admission

In order to be admitted to the course of study for the Postgraduate Certificate in Education a learner

        must satisfy the Senate that s/he holds an approved university degree.  An approved degree is one that consists of at least five, degree courses from the list of approved school subjects in one of the following combinations:

a)       three courses in one Teaching subject and two in another Teaching subject.

b)       two courses in one Teaching subject and two in another plus one course in a further Teaching subject.

c)       three courses in one Teaching subject and one in another two Teaching subjects.

 

The above requirements as to subjects shall not apply to a learner holding a degree of Bachelor of Agriculture, Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, or Bachelor of Arts (Fine Arts).

        a)    A learner who has completed three courses in either Botany or Zoology must have completed at least one course in the other Biology as a principal teaching subject.

                b)    A student who has completed three courses in either Physics or Chemistry must have completed one course in the other in order to offer Physical Science as a principal teaching subject.  Physics and Chemistry are  not recognized as separate teaching subjects.

 

d)       two courses in one Teaching subject and two in another plus one course in a further Teaching subject.

e)       three courses in one Teaching subject and one in another two Teaching subjects.

                 

        A learner may be permitted by Faculty on the recommendation of the School of Education to register for PGCE non-graduate if s/he owes module/s with the maximum credit bearing of 32 towards the completion of Fort Hare University degree and fulfils the Teaching subject combinations mentioned in 32.1.  The outstanding modules towards the completion of the undergraduate degree should be registered under Rule G 7.

 

        A candidate will not receive the certificate until all the requirements of the degree have been fulfilled.

 

        The approved degree referred to in E.32.7 below shall comply with the requirements as laid down from time to time by the Committee of Heads of Education (CHE), or shall comply with specific requirements prescribed by other employing authorities for whom the candidate intends to work.

        The PGCE provides access to the B Ed (Hons) degree at NQF Level 7 (Educators in Schooling), and to the ACE Specialization qualifications.

        In the case of the Senior and FET Phase, except in the case of degrees where the majors are Mathematics, or Zoology and Botany, or Physics and Chemistry, a degree approved for purposes of the certificate shall contain credits in at least five modules deemed by the CHE to be related to school education.  Please consult the Dean of Education for the latest information in this respect.

        The degree shall contain credits in at least two of the following subjects, at least one of which must be at the second year level (unless otherwise indicated):

·          Accounting or Accountancy

·          African Languages

·          Afrikaans

·          Art (Practical) (under certain conditions)

·          Biology or Biological Science

·          Botany

·          Business Economics

·          Chemistry

·          Computer Science

·          Drama (provided the candidate has a credit in an official language)

·          Economics or Mathematical Economics

·          English

·          Fine Art

·          Geography

·          History

·          History of Art (under certain conditions)

·          History of Music (for BMus and BA Mus only) (under certain conditions).

·          Human Movement Studies or Physical Education

·          Mathematics

·          Music (Practical) (under certain conditions)

·          Physics

·          Psychology or School Guidance (provided the candidate has credit in this subject at third-year level)

·          Technology

·          Zoology

NB   i)      For the subject method Physical Science, Physics and Chemistry, one at least at second-year level, are pre-requisites.  For the subject method Biology, Botany and Zoology, one at least at second-year level, are prerequisites.

 

ii)     For the subject method General Science (Physical Science), Physics and Chemistry, both at least at first-year level, are pre-requisites.

Duration

The duration of the programme shall not be less than one academic year (120 – 128 credits of full-time study).

Mode of instruction

Approximately one third of notional hours is dedicated to contact sessions with lecturers.  The remaining two thirds are allocated to foundational, practical and reflective group and particularly individual tasks.

Curriculum

The PGCE is a 120 credit qualification at NQF Level 6 (Educators in Schooling).  The curriculum consists of the following modules:
