Introduction to Numerical Analysis

differences; polynomial approximations; Collocation and Osculation polynomials;
Taylor polynomials; error analysis; interpolation and prediction; introduction
to Numerical differentiation and integration; Solutions to non-linear equations;
solutions of linear systems.
24 credits; one 3-hour paper.
Prerequisite:
MAT 121 or 60% for MAT 123 (113)
MAP 221:
Introduction to Analytical Methods.
Applications of
ordinary differential equations; Laplace transforms and their applications to
physical problems; Fourier series and Fourier integrals; Gamma, Beta and other
special functions.
24 credits; one 3-hour paper.
Prerequisite: MAT 121 or 60% for
MAT 123 /113 plus PHY 121/123
(b) Pure
Mathematics
Compulsory:
MAT211, MAT212 and MAT 223. In addition, students have to choose between MAT224
and MAT225.
MAT 211:
Advanced Calculus.
Differential
equations; functions of several variables; limits and continuity ;partial
derivatives and applications; multiple integrals; vector analysis. [Compulsory
module]
16 credits; one 3-hour paper.
Prerequisites: MAT111 and MAT121; or
at least 60% final mark for MAT112(MAT122) and MAT113(MAT123)
MAT 212:
Fundamentals:
Elementary
mathematical logic, number and set theory; introduction to groups, rings and
fields. [Compulsory module]
8 credits; one 2-hour paper.
Prerequisites: MAT 111
and MAT 121; or at least 60% final mark for MAT 112(MAT 122) and MAT 123(MAT
113).
MAT 223:
Linear Algebra
Linear systems;
Matrix algebra; Determinants; Vector spaces; Linear transformations;
Eigenvalues
and eigenvectors; quadratic forms. [Compulsory module].
12 credits; one 2-hour
paper.
Prerequisites: MAT 111 and MAT 121; or at least 60% final mark for MAT
112(MAT 122) and MAT 123(MAT 113).
MAT 224:
Real Analysis
Cardinality;
Order properties; Completeness and topology of the real line; Convexity on R;
Sequences and series; Limits and continuities on R; Differentiation;
Convergence; Riemann integration. [Optional module].
12 credits; one 2-hour
paper.
Prerequisites: MAT 111 & MAT 121; or at least 60% final mark for MAT
112/122 and MAT 113/123.
MAT 225:
Geometry
Euclidean and
non-Euclidean geometries. [Optional module].
12 credits; one 2-hour paper.
Prerequisites: MAT 111 and MAT 121; or at least 60% final mark for MAT 112(MAT
122) and MAT 123(MAT 113).
