Post Graduate
Our Department offers the following post
graduate programs
HONOURS LEVEL:
(a) Applied Mathematic
Prerequisites: 64 credits in MAP at 300 level; a good pass
in MAT at 300 level is also advisable. The Honours module comprises 5 topics
(125 credits), selected from the following papers in consultation with the
Programme Coordinator. A maximum of two topics (50 credits) may be selected from
the Honours modules in Pure Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science, in
consultation with the Programme Coordinator.
MAP 501: Advanced Mathematical Methods. (25
credits)
MAP
502: Group representation Theory
(25 credits)
MAP 503: Mathematical Modelling. (25 credits)
MAP 504: Relativity Theory.
(25 credits)
MAP 505: Calculus of Variations.
(25 credits)
MAP 506: Differential Geometry.
(25 credits)
MAP 507: Quantum Field Theory. (25 credits)
MAP 508: Microcomputer systems.
(25 credits)
MAP 509: Control Theory.
(25 credits)
MAP 541: Astrophysics.
(25 credits)
MAP 542: Statistical Mechanics.
(25 credits)
MAP 543: Advanced Classical Mechanics. (25 credits)
MAP 544: Electrodynamics.
(25 credits)
MAP 545: Ballistic Science.
(25 credits)
MAP 546: Numerical
Analysis.
(25 credits)
(b) Pure Mathematics
Prospective candidates should consult the Program
Coordinator. Normally candidates will not be admitted unless they have obtained
an average of at least 60% in all the required third-year mathematics modules at
the first attempt.
The examination consists of five papers (each carrying 25
credits), or four papers and a project worth 25 credits. A maximum of two papers
may be selected from Honours papers offered in Applied Mathematics, Computer
Science and Mathematical Statistics.
The following papers are usually in the Programme from
which learners must make their selection in consultation with the Programme
Coordinator. (Other topics may be offered, depending on the interests of
incumbent staff members)
MAT 501: Group Theory
(25 credits)
MAT 502: Ring Theory
(25 credits)
MAT 503: Module Theory (25 credits)
MAT 504: General Topology (25
credits)
MAT 505: Real Analysis (25 credits)
MAT 506: Complex Analysis (25
credits)
MAT 507: Functional Analysis (25
credits)
MAT 508: Measure and Integration Theory (25 credits)
MAT 509: Graph Theory (25 credits)
MAT 510: Project
(25 credits)
