The department of Business Management is characterised by vibrant and energetic staff with a strong interest in the field of management. A strong link has been established with business and industry through the membership of the department to the Border-Kei Chamber of Business. A link with ABSA Bank in East London has also established a recruitment drive for third year and post graduate students from the department. In addition, various companies in and around East London provide sponsorships and prizes to students at post graduate level. The department has secured ten (10) scholarships and three bursaries between 2005 and 2006 for post graduate studies through funding provided by the Govan Mbeki Research Centre.

There are currently 1250 students in the department who study courses offered on both the East London and the Alice campuses of the university. The B.Com (Honours) program is currently only offered on the main campus in Alice, but it is part of the strategic plan of the department to also offer this program on the East London campus in the near future. Since the Masters of Commerce (M.Com) program is offered on a research by dissertation basis, supervision can be facilitated from the East London campus.

The staff compliment of the department is currently eight (8) lecturers of which two (2) are in the process of completing their doctorates in Business Management. Current research in the department focus on the areas of relationship marketing, small business management and financial management. The research is applied to a wide variety of topics within the business field in Southern Africa. Completed research is also published in a wide variety of South African and international journals.
