Topic: Sustainable livelihood approach assessment of the impact of climate variability parameters; rainfall variability, on food security: The case of Ngqushwa Local Municipality –  Eastern Cape
Research Interests: Global change effects on rural food security.

Significance of study:

The scale and extent of water scarcity and the recurrent droughts in the region necessitate new adaptive strategies from every sector of society. The study is crucial to the mapping of vulnerability to climate change and variability and will be useful to inform sustainable livelihood strategies, government policies and strategies geared toward increasing the adaptive capacity of rural communities across the Eastern Cape.

The specific objectives include:

i) Exploring the impact of climate change on crop cultivation in the Ngqushwa Local Municipality; on maize crop farming  rural/peri-urban gardening, commercial and subsistence farming  as well as the extent of adaptation by the farmers/food growers

ii) Investigating  the impact of the food price dynamic on rural livelihoods

iii) Investigating the perceptions of rural and peri-urban communities’ on climate change and rainfall variability and the impacts on food security and vegetation cover

iv) Determining current indigenous  adaptation strategies for coping with food system stresses and nuanced climate change variables such as rainfall variability

v) Investigating and assessing the extent of the impact of the interaction between South Africa’s climate change, food and agricultural policies and the international food system and how these are articulated to galvanize food security programs in the Ngqushwa Local Municipality

vi)  Investigating and assessing the extent of the impact of the interaction between South Africa’s climate change, food and agricultural policies and the international food system and how these are articulated to galvanize food security programs in the Ngqushwa Local Municipality
