Welcome to Applied and Environmental Microbiology Research Group
At AEMREG, our mission is to conduct high quality research in Applied and Environmental Microbiology through exploitation of the advances in conventional and molecular techniques to expound our knowledge in microbial water quality, microbial ecology and environmental impact to human health, new bioactive compounds of plant and microbial origins, as well as bioremediation of polluted environments.
Water and wastewater quality: Water Quality is a significant problem in the Eastern Cape Province and one of my major and current areas of research interest. It encompasses such areas as Water/wastewater Quality Indicators, and effluent monitoring and compliance studies. Current ongoing research involves assessment of the qualities (biotic and abiotic) of final effluents of wastewater treatment plants in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, including viral pathogens in the aquatic milieu of the Eastern Cape. We have enjoyed generous grants from the NRF, MRC and WRC in these regards.
Environmental biotechnology and antibiotic resistance surveillance: This component of our research involves the exploration and exploitation of plants and microbial diversity for important biomolecules of health and biotechnological relevance; as well as surveillance of reservoirs of antibiotic resistance.
