University of Fort Hare invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of University Librarian: Library department.



  • The incumbent is expected to provide strategic leadership and a vision for the provision of academic information services at the University of Fort Hare
  • Leads and manages the UFH Libraries: a system consisting of Main library in Alice, East London Campus Library, and Bhisho Library.
  • Holds financial accountability for all aspects of UFH Libraries’ budget. Manages UFH Libraries budget and resources to ensure alignment with UFH’s strategic vision and mission
  • Has overall accountability for the shape of the UFH Libraries’ collections and for the design, implementation, and evaluation of the UFH Library Services.
  • Develops and oversees the implementation of policies and strategies to ensure that an optimal mix of information services and resources is available to UFH academic community.
  • Ensures that the University’s collections and information services are developed and managed in keeping with the changing needs of the academic community.
  • Ensures the ongoing management and use of appropriate technologies to deliver information in a changing digital environment.
  • Ensures ongoing communication between academic units and UFH Libraries in order to determine the information needs of UFH academic community.
  • Ensures cooperation with key stakeholders like SEALS, SANLIC, CHELSA, UFH ICT and UFH Research Unit, to ensure delivery of appropriate and effective services
  • Provides leadership in developing a professional, service-oriented, and academically appropriate culture within UFH Libraries and ensures effective management and development of Library staff.
  • Participates fully at senior level in all the relevant leadership, management, and governance structures of the University.




  • Master’s/ Doctoral Degree in Library and or Information Science
  • 5 years’ experience in Academic Library Management
  • Experience in establishing and sustaining partnerships
  • Ability to attract funds/sponsors
  • Financial Management
  • Project Management



  • An understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing universities and their libraries
  • Ability to manage a complex physical and virtual environment to deliver information services, and preserve information in all formats
  • Provides decisive and innovative leadership, including successful management of human, financial, and physical resources
  • Deep understanding of information technology and the ability to translate that knowledge into creative and innovative services to support teaching and research
